Isimila biking tour route

Full day

The full day biking tour will include visiting places like mkwawa kalenga museum 10km from Iringa town, Isimila Stone Age site 15km from Kalenga and then back to Iringa town 25km from Isimila .The tour of Kalenga start with a small museum housing Chief Mkwawa’s skull. The museum is also decorated with his weapons including clubs, spears, shields and guns. Outside the museum there are two tombs, there is a tomb of Chief Sapi Mkwawa the throne successor and that of Chief Adam Sapi Mkwawa the grandson of Chief Mkwawa. When reach to Isimila the site tour begins at the little museum where a guide will explain a brief introduction to the formation of the site and explains more about the fossils and tools that are displayed. The tour continues into the canyon down a steep footpath, The guide will show you some of the beds where the tools were found and explained how the rock towers were formed. The walk is very scenic, the earth has a warm reddish tint and it is also a good spot to see birds and different tree species.

  • Reach at Mkwawa kalenga museum 8:00 am
  • Have breakfast at the kalenga around 8:30 am
  • Depart from Kalenga to Isimila by 9:00 am
  • Short break at Tosamaganga trees around 10:00 am
  • Have an History of Tosamaganga Roman Catholic church around 10:30 am
  • Depart Tosamaganga to Isimila by 11:30 am
  • Have a lunch and short break at Isimila stone age site around 1:00 pm
  • Visit a museum and learn more about the history and discovery of old stone tools dated about 1.5 million years ago. 1:30 pm
  • The tour continues into the canyon down a steep footpath up to the view point for the beautiful Natural pillars(Earth pillars). The walk is very scenic, the earth has a warm reddish tint and it is also a good spot to see birds and different tree species. around 2:00 pm
  • Have a short break at the site office about 3:30 pm
  • Return to Iringa 4:00 pm (End of tour)
